fredFred Zirm (Artistic Director) After receiving an M.F.A. in playwriting from the University of Iowa, Fred Zirm directed nearly one hundred plays at the Landon School in Bethesda while also teaching courses in English and acting. The musicals among his productions include The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, Into the Woods, Urinetown, Bye Bye Birdie, Kiss Me Kate, H.M.S. Pinafore, Fiddler on the Roof, The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and Anything Goes. His non-musical productions range from The Importance of Being Earnest to The Crucible and The Cherry Orchard, in addition to seven of Shakespeare’s plays. Several of his students have become professional actors, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, of Seinfeld and Veep fame, and Wallace Acton, who played Hamlet and Richard III at the Shakespeare Theater.

Outside of Landon, he has served as script evaluator for the Chautauqua Theater Company, Silver Spring Stage, and New Playwrights’ Theater, as well as directing Fiddler on the Roof at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville and several staged readings and one full professional production at New Playwrights’ Theater in DC. He is enjoying working at the Arts Barn with KAT’s Second Stage program.

arielleArielle Bayer (Resident Music Director) holds a degree in Music Education from Shepherd University and has been a music teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools for ten years. Over the years, Arielle has worked as Music Director with summer theatre camps, including Adventure Theatre, Glen Echo Children’s Theatre, and Imagination Stage. Additionally, Arielle serves as Music Director for many local community theatre groups, including DTC, RMT, FtP, PTC, KAT, and MP. She has also been involved as Music Director with the student theatre groups K2S, DTC Kids, Ovations Theatre, and Act II @ Levine. Arielle is ecstatic to continue to join forces with Fred Zirm at KAT Second Stage!

jmorrisseyJennifer Morrissey (Stage Manager) is delighted to join the KAT Second Stage production team. She worked with Fred Zirm as the Stage Manager for The Wizard of Oz YPE, The Fiddler on the Roof JR and Aladdin JR at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn, and also did make-up for the casts of each of those shows. A former teacher, Jennifer now spends most days as a practicing attorney in Washington, DC, specializing in regulation of energy and natural resources; however, the theater is her first love. Her bachelor’s degree is in drama and writing. She has written and directed original shows and musical reviews, and performed in numerous productions both in lead and supporting roles. She also taught drama to American and international high school students.

doeDoe B. Kim (Technical Advisor) is thrilled to be supporting the team of Mr. Zirm and Ms. Bayer in this latest iteration of KAT Second Stage. Doe has been a part of Second Stage since inception and remembers the days of building set pieces in the old firehouse across Kent Square Road (fire hazards and all). He has been seen on the Arts Barn stage as Horton the Elephant, the Wizard of Oz, a harmonizing Vulture, Wilbur the Pig, Augustus Gloop, and Daddy Warbucks. Doe has also built sets and provided music direction for several K2S productions. Favorite shows include Charlotte’s Web, A Year with Frog and Toad, The Wizard of Oz, The Jungle Book KIDS, and Annie KIDS.

Doe currently lives in Albuquerque, NM, but he always seems to manage to be back in town for Second Stage tech weeks and KAT mainstage performances. He is grateful that Fred emailed KAT back in 2014 expressing interest in directing shows at Second Stage, and even though he is a Little Hoya through and through, working with the former Landon drama director has been an amazing experience. Doe is happy to provide production support for this excellent team at Second Stage.
